What began as an ordinary trip on the Shanghai metro ended in a scene of physical violence and public humiliation. A young woman, whose identity is being kept confidential, found herself at the center of an assault by an elderly couple and another older woman, all over a seat.

According to witnesses and reports from local media, the conflict erupted when one of the older women demanded the young woman’s seat. She politely refused, explaining that she had severe menstrual pain and did not feel well enough to remain standing in a crowded carriage. This response, instead of generating empathy, unleashed irrational fury in the elderly people.
