Two high school students in Putian, China, learned the hard way that “no good deed goes unpunished”. On February 19, 2026, the girls helped an elderly woman who fell off her bicycle after losing her balance. The thanks they got? A lawsuit for the astronomical sum of $40,300.

The woman claimed that the students appeared out of nowhere, causing her to hesitate and fall off her bicycle. Police determined that the girls bear secondary responsibility in the accident, arguing that their presence “frightened” the woman.

Now they must pay thousands of dollars for an impact that, in many people’s eyes, they did not even cause.
