Dolly Parton smiled until the end – Eleven days before her death, she appeared via video call at the opening of an attraction at Dollywood, Tennessee.
She said she was dizzy and dehydrated. No one imagined it was her final farewell.
Her team later called it a “brief battle against cancer”, but for those who loved her, the news came like a bucket of cold water: they believed she would recover.
She was admitted to Nashville’s Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center on August 21, 2026.
She died four days later, at the age of 80, surrounded by her family.
Her nephew Bryan Seaver, who had been her head of security for more than twenty years, was the one who had to announce to the world that country music’s most beloved voice had fallen silent.
A year and a half earlier, she had lost Carl Dean, her husband of 58 years. She herself admitted that, while caring for him, she stopped taking care of herself. Perhaps that is why she kept singing, smiling, and giving hope until her body no longer allowed her to.
Cancer never took away her way of looking at life.
