Emma Watson said that, since she was a child, her father gave her wine mixed with water during lunch, something that was completely normal to her. And it had a lot to do with the environment in which she grew up: her father, a lawyer by profession, was also a great wine connoisseur and had bought vineyards in France when she was still young.
Emma and her brother Alex spent part of their childhood surrounded by that family culture, so alcohol was never presented at home as something forbidden. That is why, when she reached adolescence, she was surprised to see how excited other young people became when they managed to drink. She simply did not understand the mystery.
The actress even explained that, as she was used to seeing wine served with meals, she did not necessarily associate it with getting drunk either. Years later, that story resurfaced while she was promoting Renais alongside her brother, the gin he created inspired precisely by his family’s winemaking business.
While her classmates saw alcohol as a “forbidden fruit”, Emma had spent years seeing it simply as something that was on the family table.
