In 2016, a 15-year-old Haaland recorded a homemade video alongside his teammates from Norway’s under-17 national team. They called themselves ‘Flow Kingz,’ he used the stage name ‘Lyng,’ and between jumps on a trampoline and a prop grill, he rapped a song called ‘Kygo jo’ that no one imagined would be heard again ten years later.
But it came back. The video has already surpassed 21 million views on YouTube, and Norwegian DJ Kygo himself took the song and released a house remix that blew up on social media and Spotify. Haaland reacted humorously upon seeing his musical past come back to life at just about the worst-best possible moment.
Because while the clip was going viral, Norway beat Brazil 2-1 with a brace from him and reached, for the first time in history, a World Cup quarterfinal. On Saturday, July 11, at Miami Stadium, they will play for a place in the semifinals against England. With seven goals in four matches, Haaland is no longer rapping about a prop grill: today, he is truly making history.
