Virgil van Dijk, captain of the Netherlands and one of the most respected defenders in the world, had enough and said it bluntly: the hydration breaks at the 2026 World Cup are not for your health — they’re for the money. 💥

After the 2-2 draw against Japan on June 14 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas — a venue with air conditioning, not exactly the Sahara Desert — the Liverpool center-back took direct aim at FIFA: “Every time there’s a break, the broadcasts cut to commercials. I don’t like that it’s being applied indiscriminately”. And it makes sense: FIFA confirmed in December 2025 mandatory 3-minute breaks per half in all matches, regardless of the weather. The following March, it authorized broadcasters to air ads during that interruption. Coincidence, right? 🤔

What Van Dijk said out loud, the fans are shouting from the stands: massive boos in Dallas, Monterrey, and Atlanta. Journalist Henry Winter summed it up brutally: the match “turned into one of four quarters”. FIFA says it’s for the players’ well-being. Van Dijk says that doesn’t convince anyone when you’re playing indoors with climate control. Who do you believe? 👇
