Chelsea McGillivray was 31 years old and had a perfect pregnancy.

She arrived at the labor ward in Glasgow at 8:30 in the morning. Nine minutes later, Tommy was born. And during those same minutes, Chelsea’s heart stopped for no reason the doctors can still explain. She underwent an emergency C-section, Tommy was delivered alive, and for hours entire teams from two hospitals tried to revive her. They couldn’t.

Her sister-in-law Lorna believes Chelsea’s body held out just long enough for her son to be born healthy: “It was the last thing she could do for him”. Tommy left the neonatal ICU days later, while Jack Mitchell, her partner, is learning to be a father alone with what they had both planned over nine months. They will never let Tommy forget who brought him into the world.
