A Boeing Vertol CH-47D Chinook military helicopter was taking part in the installation of a huge flame-shaped sculpture on the iconic Olympic Bridge when the disaster occurred.
The aircraft was carrying out a delicate low-altitude maneuver over the Han River. Then, for reasons captured on video, the rotor system struck the bridge structure. The helicopter disintegrated within seconds and fell into the water.
The three crew members on board died in the accident. The incident shocked the country and left one of the most remembered aerial scenes in South Korea’s recent history.
