Face to face with the man who left her in a wheelchair

In a moment that left the entire courtroom in silence, Emine Özsoy, the Turkish artist who was left paralyzed after being pushed onto the New York subway tracks in 2023, was finally able to confront her attacker. Confined to a motorized wheelchair and unable to move her limbs, Emine stared at Kamal Semrade as she reminded him of the indescribable pain of losing her independence from one second to the next. “I can no longer practice my profession and I face serious financial difficulties”, she said in a broken but firm voice, before an aggressor who refused to look her in the eye throughout the hearing.

The most shocking part of the day was not only Emine’s testimony, but also Semrade’s cold attitude. Judge Althea Drysdale did not hide her indignation at the man’s total lack of remorse, after he attacked Emine at random while she was on her way to work. While the victim described how she now needs help even for the most basic needs and how she could not even wipe away her own tears during the trial, the defendant remained impassive. This lack of humanity was key to the judge handing down the maximum sentence requested by the prosecution.

The closing of this legal chapter came with a sentence of 20 years in prison for Semrade for attempted murder and assault. Although Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg noted that no sentence can undo the profound harm caused, the community has rallied around Emine, whose courage in facing the man who changed her fate forever has gone viral. Her story is a painful reminder of vulnerability in big cities, but above all, of the resilience of a woman who, despite having lost almost everything, remained standing to demand justice.
