Danny Valdebenito is a painter and lives in San Ignacio, in the Ñuble region of Chile. Every day he does the same thing: he goes out for a walk holding the hand of his son Tomás, a young man with severe autism who needs that contact to feel safe on the street.
But that gesture of care became the target of mockery. Strangers who see them pass by assume they are a couple and shout homophobic insults at them, without stopping for a second to think about what they are really seeing.
Danny decided not to stay silent and told everything on Facebook: he described the lewd comments, the superficiality of those who judge without knowing, and the fear he carries inside as he thinks about the day when he is no longer there to protect his son.
Even so, he does not intend to slow down or let go of that hand. “Son, I will never let go of your hand”, he wrote, and that phrase spread across thousands of screens in Chile. Because sometimes the greatest love is visible precisely in what people choose not to understand.
