Dustin Wakefield was 21 years old and vacationing in Miami Beach with his wife and 1-year-old son.
On August 24, 2021, while they were having dinner at a restaurant on Ocean Drive, Tamarius Davis pointed a gun at the child. According to prosecutors, Wakefield stepped in and was shot five times. Afterward, Davis was seen dancing and laughing. A witness said he seemed to be celebrating.

Davis, who was 22 at the time, told investigators that he was high on hallucinogenic mushrooms and had chosen his victim at random. This Thursday, at age 27, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison for second-degree murder. In response to the defense’s attempt to reduce his responsibility, Judge Laura Stuzin was blunt: “This was not a mistake or a bad episode. This could have been prevented”.

Davis remained silent as the sentence was read. Is this enough justice for a family that lost a father protecting his child?
