Ruby had just given birth to her six puppies on a farm in Geneseo, New York. Just one week later, still exhausted and with her belly full of milk, she found something she did not expect: a newborn kitten, alone, abandoned, too small to survive without help.
She did not hesitate. Brittany Callan, owner of the farm where Ruby lives with her family, says that the dog simply brought it close to her body and let it feed alongside her own babies. The kitten suckled as if it had been born right there, among the Doberman puppies, and Ruby let it stay.
Experts explain that suckling stimulates prolactin and activates milk production, even in females that were not nursing at the time. But what no science can fully explain is why a dog, exhausted by her own litter, still decides to make room for one more. Perhaps maternal instinct simply knows no species.
