FIFA forced Gillette to cover its logo in its own stadium, and its response went viral around the world: this is marketing

FIFA has an ironclad rule at the 2026 World Cup: no brand that is not an official sponsor can appear inside the stadiums. Simple and blunt. The problem for Gillette is that the tournament is being played, in part, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts — its home, its name in giant letters on the facade. 🪒

The obvious solution was to hang a gray tarp and accept it. Gillette chose something else: it covered its monumental logo with a fabric that simulates a huge layer of white shaving foam. A direct reference to its most iconic product, visible to millions of people. The image exploded on social media on June 20, 2026 and within hours racked up thousands of comments. Levi’s had done something similar in Santa Clara weeks earlier, but Gillette took it to another level. 🌍

The most ironic thing is that the restriction worked out for them for free: without paying a dollar in official sponsorship, they landed one of the most talked-about campaigns of the tournament. Sometimes the best marketing move is the one they force you to make. 🏆
