$450 for a piece of grass. That simple, that absurd. FIFA announced that it will sell fragments of the turf to be used in the 2026 World Cup final, on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Each piece measures just 17.5 by 17.5 by 17.5 and comes sealed in acrylic alongside a commemorative USB, all packaged in a little box as if it were a jewel. The official store describes it as “a unique collector’s item” that celebrates “one of the world’s biggest sporting events”.
The detail that outrages more than a few people. It will only be shipped to the United States and Europe, and only after the final is played. Meanwhile, fans continue to complain about the most expensive tickets in World Cup history and not being able to bring even water into stadiums. The turf, apparently, does have priority.
