Romanian fighter Alice Ardelean made history in the UFC after defeating Brazil’s Polyana Viana with a technique never before seen inside the organization.
It happened at UFC Vegas 117, where Ardelean won by submission using a “Capsule Lock”, a hold so unusual that it had never before been used successfully in more than 30 years of the company’s history.
The historic moment came in the second round, when the Brazilian tried to control the fight on the ground. There, the Romanian trapped her rival’s leg between both bodies and applied pressure until forcing her to verbally submit.
The move surprised even the winner herself, who admitted: “Yeah, I saw it on Instagram”, and then reacted in disbelief when she was told that no one had ever won that way before in the UFC: “Oh, I made history”.
The performance was so impressive that the UFC awarded her a 50 thousand dollar “Performance of the Night” bonus. In addition to earning her third consecutive victory, Ardelean emerged as a candidate for one of the year’s most memorable submissions.
