Shannon Emmel and a friend were exploring the Alligator River refuge in North Carolina when something appeared in the distance. The photographer took a picture, never imagining she had just come across one of the hardest animals to spot in the wild.
When she zoomed in on the image, she discovered the surprise: it was a red wolf.
They watched it cross a canal and disappear into the grass. They moved to another spot, waited, and shortly afterward, the animal appeared again, walking calmly near them.
They soon discovered that his name is Finch, he is about 10 years old, and he was born in captivity. He was released in 2024 as part of a program to recover a species that had been on the brink of extinction. Since then, he has already had three litters.
According to The Dodo, fewer than 40 wild red wolves remain, and they all live in that area of North Carolina.
This summer, one was killed after being hit by a car, so Emmel is calling for more crossings and underpasses to protect them.
What might seem to anyone like a simple photo of a wolf was, in reality, an extraordinary encounter with one of the last of its kind.
