On a vacant lot in Puente Alto, Chile, a dog had been trapped under a meter of mud for who knows how long.

The neighbors who live behind the lot heard it barking in the distance and did not hesitate: they called the Fire Department.

Getting to him was not easy. The volunteers had to prune blackberry bushes and dig by hand through the mud while two families from the area helped them search the entire site.

“We did not hesitate for a second and got to work”, the fire company recounted.

Commander Sergio Pinilla acknowledged that it is still unclear whether someone buried the animal on purpose or whether it became trapped by a landslide.

One of the families that took part in the search decided to adopt him, care for him, and take him to the veterinarian.

The mud that nearly killed him ended up giving him a home.
