It was in February 2017 when an electrical fault set a farm in Wiltshire, England, on fire. Putting 60 tons of hay and the lives of dozens of animals at risk. The firefighters from Pewsey Fire Station went in and rescued 18 piglets and two adult sows from the flames. A miraculous rescue, without a doubt.
Six months later, Rachel Rivers, the farm’s owner, decided to thank the firefighters in an unusual way: she brought them the rescued piglets…
Turned into sausages.
The firefighters did not seem to mind the irony; they organized a barbecue and uploaded photos to social media describing the sausages as “fantastic”. The reaction was immediate. Users and even PETA accused them of being insensitive. While others defended them, arguing that those animals had already been destined for the slaughterhouse from the day they were born.
The owner, for her part, did not apologize, emphasizing that the piglets were not her pets and that the sausages were her way of saying thank you, since the farm is her livelihood and way of life.
“I gave those animals the best quality of life I could give them, before the time came for them to go to the slaughterhouse and enter the food chain”.
