Gandalf cannot walk. He lives in Shaler, Pennsylvania, and that night the early July 4 fireworks frightened him so much that he managed to escape from home. His owner immediately went out to look for him and did not stop all night. Nothing. No trace.

While thunder and fireworks exploded outside, Gandalf was only six houses away, trapped in a ravine, covered in leaves, shivering from cold and fear. That was where the human search reached its limit.

Amelia Breitenbach, a volunteer with Pittsburgh Drone Pet Search and Rescue, arrived with her drone and flew over the area. Within minutes, she saw him: a shivering bundle hidden among the brush. The reunion was recorded and has already amassed nearly 8 million views. Sometimes technology finds what the human eye cannot see.
