Five men in less than a week. That is the figure that has put residents of Lagos de Moreno, in the Mexican state of Jalisco, on alert, where since June 12 a series of discoveries has been recorded with no precedent in the area: people found tied to poles in plain sight on public roads, at different points across the city.

The latest case occurred at dawn, at the intersection of Paseos de la Montaña and Paseo de la Cuesta, in front of a Bodega Aurrerá Express branch. The victim had a head wound, allegedly caused by a blunt blow, and a black motorcycle was found next to him. The previous cases were spread across the El Calvario neighborhood, the Centro neighborhood, and the Indeco neighborhood, where two men were found under identical circumstances.

What most outrages residents is not only the violence itself, but the official silence: so far, authorities at the different levels of government have not identified those responsible, have not explained the motive, and have not offered any concrete guarantee of safety for a city that woke up, five times in a row, to a new victim tied to a pole.
