Uruguayan footballer Lucas Torreira went through a very serious incident in Turkey after being attacked by a man who had long been obsessed with the player’s current partner.
According to the investigation, the attacker, identified as Yusuf Y., had already posted threats on social media and had a history of violent behavior. It all began because of the aggressor’s obsession with Ipek Birol. In his statement to the court, the man confessed that he felt a “platonic love” for her and that he began to hate Torreira after seeing photos of the two of them.
The man followed the player to a shopping mall and punched him in the face. He then tried to escape, but was quickly arrested by the police. Torreira’s entourage intervened to hold him back.
Although Torreira’s injuries were minor, the Turkish justice system determined that there was a risk of further attacks and ordered the attacker held in pretrial detention.
