Rubén ate until he lost consciousness.

It wasn’t hunger. It was the only way he could find to stop thinking and be able to sleep. “For me, it was like a shoulder to cry on”, he says. Eating in silence and without restraint, he eventually reached 250 kilos, and food became the drug his body could not stop demanding.

For years he tried to lose weight without success, until he understood something that changed his life: those kilos could kill him. He decided to have surgery and had 80% of his stomach removed. “Blessed was the day I decided to have surgery”, he repeats now, whenever he can.

Today he weighs around 90 kilos. He lost 137, but he also gained something else: he learned to look at his body, with the excess skin left behind, as the map of a battle he keeps winning every day. And he decided to tell his story, so that others who eat to avoid feeling can know that it is possible to stop in time too.
