The parish only wanted to invite people to the novena.
On September 28, Paróquia Nossa Senhora Aparecida, in Varginha, Minas Gerais, posted a video on Instagram announcing the celebration of its patron saint, from October 2 to 12.
At the front was Father João Paulo Gonçalves de Carvalho, 33, the church’s administrator and director of the diocesan radio station. Just a few hours later, the video had already surpassed 360 thousand views, and the comments were about everything except the novena.
“I’ve already sinned”, wrote one internet user. Another said it would be impossible to pay attention during Mass. One person said “I haven’t even been to confession and I’m already sinning”, and a man who identified himself as an atheist admitted that “The enemy is cunning; he tests my atheism every day”.
The parish turned off comments on the post, but the jokes kept appearing in other posts featuring the priest.
