Joseph Ratzinger was born in Germany in 1927 and was ordained a priest in 1951. Decades later, in 2005, he was elected pope and took the name Benedicto XVI. He remained at the head of the Catholic Church until 2013, when he made a historic resignation, the first by a pontiff in nearly 600 years.
