Former NBA player declared himself eligible for the WNBA Draft after players welcomed transgender athletes

Enes Kanter Freedom is 2.10 tall and weighs 113 kilos. And he has just declared himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft.

It is not that he suddenly wants to switch leagues. It is a calculated move: the WNBA has never clearly defined what is considered a “woman” in its collective bargaining agreement; it only says that the league is for female players. So Kanter, along with Royce White (another former NBA player who played just three games in his entire career), decided to test the limits of that ambiguity after several players publicly defended including trans athletes in women’s basketball and said they would welcome them into the league.

Neither Kanter nor White will play a single minute in the WNBA, and they both know it. But their “candidacy” has already generated more buzz than any official statement from the league, and now everyone is asking the same thing: what exactly does it mean to be eligible?
