Royce White is 35 years old, played in the NBA, and is now running for a U.S. Senate seat representing Minnesota. This week, he announced that he is declaring for the 2027 WNBA draft, saying that he “sometimes” identifies as a transgender woman.
On Sunday, he posted his first photo on X wearing a blonde wig, with his beard intact, and promised to try it on the court the next day. The post surpassed 3.4 million views. He is not the first: days earlier, Enes Kanter Freedom had made an almost identical announcement.
Neither of them has filed official paperwork with the league. The WNBA has already said that it does not intend to become anyone’s “political pawn”. White went further: he warned that if they reject him, he will sue them for discrimination.
