Sonya Massey was 36 years old and had only called 911 to ask for help.
It was July 2024, in Springfield, Illinois, and she thought she saw an intruder in her home. The person who arrived was Sean Grayson, an officer with Sangamon County. According to court testimony, she lifted a pot of boiling water from the stove while responding to a religious comment by Grayson himself. He interpreted it as a threat and shot her. Everything was recorded on the body camera of another officer accompanying him.
In October 2025, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, and in January 2026 he received 20 years in prison. But Grayson was already facing another sentence: colon cancer diagnosed in 2023 that by then had spread to his liver, lungs, and rectum. In May, he requested early medical release under an Illinois law for terminally ill prisoners. A month before his death, his request was denied. On Sunday, August 23, 2026, he died in prison at the age of 32, just six months after beginning to serve his sentence.
