At 4 in the morning on Sunday, June 14, Brazilian police entered a nightclub in Belo Horizonte and took Jô — João Alves de Assis Silva — into custody, the former striker for Manchester City and Everton. It was not the first time. It was the fifth.
The arrest warrant had been issued by a court in São Paulo for nonpayment of child support. The accumulated debt had reached 145.400 Brazilian reais (about 26.000 dollars) according to 2025 court documents, and it had been initiated by Maiara Quiderolly, an influencer with whom Jô had an affair while he was married to Cláudia Silva. João Gabriel, the former footballer’s eighth child, was born from that relationship. Six of his eight children were conceived outside his marriage.
Five arrests, a growing debt, and a night of partying that ended in handcuffs. Jô’s story is that of a man who had fame, multimillion-dollar contracts, and a well-known surname in Europe — and who still chose to turn his back on his own children.
