When Zuly Ventura Vásquez found her on a street in Texas, in the midst of a historic cold wave, the dog was curled up over her only puppy, using what little warmth she had left so he wouldn’t freeze to death. She was malnourished and exhausted, yet she still didn’t move from on top of her pup.
Houston K-911 Rescue rescued them both and provided veterinary treatment. The photo of Leia hugging Luke went viral and reached Colorado, where the organization Up Pup and Away offered to transport them to give them another chance. Luke already has a forever family. Leia, on the other hand, is still in a foster home, learning to trust again, ride the elevator by herself, and ask for belly rubs.
She no longer suffers from cold or hunger. All she needs is a home that will choose her, just as she chose to protect her son with everything she had.
