It was hanging from a dry branch in the middle of the water, unable to move.
That’s how a group of people boating across the lake found it: a trapped, exhausted heron, its legs tangled in the dead wood sticking out of the water. No one hesitated. They brought the boat closer, carefully took it in their hands, and began freeing it little by little, while the bird let itself be helped as if it understood that this moment was its only way out.


When it was finally free, it didn’t fly off in fright. It stayed standing on the boat for a few seconds, close to those who had saved it, as if it needed to realize that there was no longer any danger. Then it spread its wings and flew low, skimming the water, toward the other side of the lake. Those who were there could only watch it leave, in silence, with that feeling of having done something small that, for it, meant everything.
