Joan, Terry, and Marta are no longer young. They have spent nearly forty years waiting for their nephews to sit down at the family table again, and time has begun to press.

Erik was 18 and Lyle 21 when the life they knew ended in 1989, in the Beverly Hills home where their parents died. Since then, they have built another version of themselves inside a cell. A hospice care program for other inmates, a beautification project, years devoted to understanding what happened to them and what they did.

The California Board of Parole Hearings decided to move up the hearing that could change everything. It was moved from August 2028 to March 2027, a year and a half earlier. It is not a promise of freedom, only the opportunity for someone to look at them again and decide whether the man who entered prison at 18 is still the same person who, now 54, is asking for a second chance to hug his aunts while they can still feel him.
