Before filling stadiums, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio bagged groceries in Puerto Rico.

While working at the checkout, he uploaded songs to SoundCloud. No one asked him for them. No one promoted them. He made them himself and published them himself. And when people began contacting him about his music, he did not even know how much to charge.

He did not change languages so the world would listen to him. He sang in Spanish when Spanish did not top the global charts. And he kept doing it when they told him that would get him nowhere.

On February 1, 2026, in Los Angeles, his album Debí Tirar Más Fotos won the Grammy for Album of the Year. In 68 years of awards, never before had an album entirely in Spanish taken home that trophy.

That night he also won Best Latin Urban Music Album, and his song Eoo won the Grammy for Best Global Music Performance. He took the stage and thanked his mother for giving birth to him in Puerto Rico.

Five months later, in July, the Grévin Museum in Paris unveiled a wax figure in his likeness. The first Latin artist to have one.

The same man who bagged groceries is now made of wax in France, singing in the language in which he learned to dream.

Benito never translated his music; instead, the world learned to adapt to it.
