The 52-year-old comedian shared on the IMO podcast with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson how he experienced his 24-year-old son Kai’s transition. “When they went through the transition, I went through it too”, he said. “I went from denial to total acceptance”. No years of silence or distance: just one week to choose love over fear.
He joked that if God ever closes the gates of heaven to his son, he will shave off his beard to sneak him in through the back. But behind the joke is a serious promise: “I’m going to love my baby. I will always protect them, I will always respect them”. As for the fans he might lose because of it, he has a simple calculation: for every one who leaves, he says he gains 150 more. Kai, he sums up, “is the same kid he was before, only now he has a beard” 🩷
