Some admissions are the last thing anyone expects from a legend, and this was one of them. Giorgio Chiellini, the iconic Italian defender who spent years stopping the best forwards in the world, decided to let his guard down and talk about a subject almost no footballer touches on: what sporting success does for your social life.

Without beating around the bush and with a degree of self-deprecation that disarmed everyone, he admitted that his career opened doors for him that his looks never would have. He said being a successful footballer helped him win over many more women than he would have on his own, and summed it up with a phrase that is now making the rounds everywhere: “I’m ugly as sin”.

He said it with humor and not a hint of embarrassment, like someone who has already made peace with the mirror. When someone can laugh at themselves like that, people tend to like them even more.
