Fabiana Blanco is 12 years old and was alone in her home in La Guaira, Venezuela, when everything started shaking. She went to the kitchen for water and the building collapsed. She had no time to run. She slid down to the floor and, amid the dust and rubble, found a space where she could settle in.
There, trapped and without light, she took out her phone and recorded a video asking for help: “I’m alone, there are many neighbors trapped and we need your help”, she said, even giving the exact location of the place. She was the only survivor in the entire building.
When rescuers finally reached her, the world expected to see the face of fear. Instead, they found a smile. That image, of a girl who endured alone for hours and came out smiling, spread across social media and reminded millions that sometimes hope can fit into a very small space.
