Ignorance and the lack of empathy on social media have once again crossed an unforgivable line. What should have been a wave of congratulations and good wishes for a little girl celebrating her 12th birthday turned into a regrettable scene of cyberbullying, mockery, and merciless comments.
Hundreds of users, hiding behind a screen, began attacking the birthday girl’s physical appearance, deliberately mistaking her for a boy and criticizing her femininity. What these “trolls” did not bother to investigate was the painful and heroic reality behind that image.
Her short hair was not because she was a boy, but rather, it was the testimony of the hardest battle a child can face: Cancer.
The little girl had just gone through months of aggressive chemotherapy sessions and medical treatments that weakened her body, but not her spirit. Therefore, that birthday party was not an ordinary celebration; it was the celebration of a miracle, the definitive victory of a true warrior who managed to defeat the illness and embrace a second chance at life.
“While the internet was busy judging her and spewing venom over her appearance, she was only smiling because she knows what it really costs to be alive”, wrote an outraged user when the true story became known.
The carelessness with which many people insult others on the internet can end up hurting people who are carrying invisible and extremely painful battles.
