7.8% of the world’s population is undernourished. It sounds high, but it is the lowest figure since the pandemic shut down factories, ports, and borders a few years ago.
The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) confirms this in its 2026 report: for the third consecutive year, hunger is declining. Asia is leading the drop, with Central Asia going from 7.7% to just 2.8% undernourishment in 15 years, a level comparable to that of the richest countries on the planet. Latin America and the Caribbean are also improving, although more slowly.
Africa remains the painful exception, with more than 20% undernourishment in conflict zones. That is the key: where there is war, there is hunger. Where there is peace, as in Central Asia, hunger can almost disappear. The FAO projects that by 2030 the figure will fall another 20%, the lowest level ever recorded in human history.
