Orlando Gill, a 26-year-old Paraguayan goalkeeper, literally sold everything he had to save his newborn son. His U-20 jersey, his soccer shoes, his club clothing: everything passed into other hands to pay Lautaro’s medical expenses, after he was born premature in December 2022 following emergency surgery that put his wife Melissa Ávalos’s life at risk.
At that time Gill had barely played two professional matches. A year later, San Lorenzo de Almagro took a chance on him on loan, and what followed was a quiet rise: reserve team in 2024, starter in 2025, and a call-up from Gustavo Alfaro that led to his debut for Paraguay’s senior national team last September.
Gill saved two penalties to give Paraguay the penalty-shootout victory over Germany and a ticket to the round of 16. The same man who sold his clothes to save his family now carries on his shoulders the World Cup dream of an entire country.
