“God is nonbinary. But I’m going to go further and say that God is actually also trans”: the controversial trans priest responds to her “haters” by blessing them

Flourish Klink, a trans, nonbinary Episcopal priest, preached a sermon in March at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York that went viral months later. She said God is nonbinary and trans too, and delivered the line that set it all off: “I think Jesus was not only transfigured. I think Jesus transitioned”.

The clips racked up millions of views. Conservative commentators and users accused her of departing from Christian teaching; some called it heresy, while others called her a false prophet. Klink, for her part, presented the idea as her personal theological interpretation, not as Church doctrine.

Her response was not what many expected. On Instagram she wrote: “One thing social media is good for is sending love to all your haters”. And she added: “What a blessing to see people at their worst and know that God loves them anyway!”.

For some, it’s the most Christian attitude in the whole controversy. For others, an elegant way to dodge the substance of the criticism. What do you see: an example of faith or a well-disguised provocation?
