All he has is the certainty that he had to be there. That is how he explained it himself through tears, in front of the cameras, with red eyes from four days without closing his eyelids.
His testimony adds to that of dozens of civilian volunteers who threw themselves into the rubble in La Guaira after the earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24, a tragedy that has already claimed nearly 1,500 lives. He says that what weighs on him most is not the exhaustion, but hearing families ask him to look for a relative on such-and-such floor, in such-and-such room.
He did not care about worrying his own family. Nor about sleeping. He only repeats one phrase that explains everything: every second he rests, there is someone else waiting under the rubble for someone like him to arrive in time.
