The images arrived in a private message to a specialist along with a simple question: what is this? They showed a person’s skin, freshly treated with laser hair removal, covered in small, red, inflamed bumps. The most likely explanation has a name: perifollicular edema.

Although it may look alarming at first glance, this is one of the most common reactions after this procedure. It occurs because the laser targets melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. When heated, the heat doesn’t stay in the hair alone; it is also transferred to the entire follicle, the root from which each hair grows.

As a result, the tissue surrounding the root becomes inflamed, and the skin rises into small, reddened bumps. That’s why there’s a key detail that can help identify it: the bumps follow exactly the same pattern as the hairs in that area.

In most cases, this reaction appears shortly after the session and goes away on its own within a few hours or a few days. Applying cold to the area, avoiding the sun, intense heat, and irritating products usually helps calm the skin. However, if blisters, scabs, severe pain, or dark spots appear, or the inflammation does not improve after a few days, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist, as it could be a burn or another complication.

The specialist also left a message that goes beyond the reaction itself: hair removal should not be done by someone else or under anyone’s pressure. Like any cosmetic procedure, it carries risks, side effects, and contraindications, so the decision should always be personal and informed.
