Lillian Weber was 96 years old when she sat down in front of her sewing machine with a goal that seemed impossible: to make one dress a day for girls in Africa she would never meet.
She lived in Iowa, United States, and had been sewing since she was 8 years old, but she never imagined that this skill would end up clothing thousands of girls more than 12.000 kilometers away.
She joined a group of seamstresses over 80 years old and began donating each garment to Little Dresses for Africa, an organization that had already distributed millions of dresses in nearly 50 countries across the continent.
Each one featured a unique detail: lace, a patch, a hand-embroidered flower, as if every girl deserved to feel special even though they would never exchange a word.
Her goal was to reach 1.000 dresses before turning 100. She far exceeded it: by the time she blew out the candles, she had already sewn 1.051. She never stopped sewing. At 99, she was still sitting in front of the machine, convinced that age was no reason to stop giving. Lillian died at 100 years old, one day before turning 101, with a record of more than 1200 dresses made with her own hands.
