Bill Lindler was heading home when he saw the smoke.
In the neighbor’s garage in Hanahan, South Carolina, he found a pit bull puppy barely three weeks old, trapped by the flames. He didn’t think twice: he pulled him from the fire and gave him mouth-to-snout resuscitation until he breathed again. Jake had burns over more than 70% of his body and spent weeks fighting to survive at a veterinary clinic.
When his family never came back for him, Bill realized he could no longer let him go. He adopted him, and Jake recovered so well that today he lives at the fire station, with his own bed and his own jacket. He was named an honorary firefighter and visits schools to teach children about fire prevention.
His scars no longer tell a tragedy. They tell the story of two lives that saved each other.
