Roger Logan grew up on the same block in Brooklyn as Chris Rock.

According to the comedian, he was the brother of one of his best friends and spent 19 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. Rock told The New York Times in “The Interview”: Roger’s brother begged him again and again to pay for a lawyer, and he never did.

His explanation was as direct as it was unsettling. He had a rule, the “no-lawyers” rule, because a lawyer is an expense with no defined endpoint. A mortgage or school tuition has a fixed amount; legal fees, he said, have no known end date.

And he said it without sugarcoating it: “I had the means to help him and I didn’t”. He admitted that the decision still weighs on him and that he doesn’t even know whether they would have managed to get him out.

People on social media were divided: some harshly criticized him, while others said they understood that litigation has no predictable end.
