29-year-old Hailey Bieber appeared semi-nude on the sands of Rio de Janeiro, with a can of Antarctica guaraná as her only companion and her tan lines taking center stage.
The photo is the cover of The Brazil Issue, the third edition of ICE Magazine, directed by photographer Renell Medrano.
But behind the image lies something few people knew: Hailey’s mother, Kennya Deodato, was born in Rio de Janeiro, and her grandfather is Eumir Deodato, a Brazilian musician who won a Grammy for his work in jazz and bossa nova.
Hailey said she grew up listening to her mother and grandmother speak Portuguese with a strong accent, and that she inherited her relationship with her body from them. Alongside Juliana Nalu, Tina Kunakey, Evellin Andrade, and Alicia Thompson, the shoot also included women chosen through a casting process on the beaches and at Rio’s Carnival.
