You look at two almost identical cats, same coat, same breed, and your instinct picks the one with the serious expression as the dangerous one. You’re wrong.
The key is in the eyes. When a cat dilates its pupils to the maximum, without low light being the reason, its nervous system is on full alert: adrenaline, focus, and the famous hunter mode activated. Veterinarians describe it as the instant before the attack, whether real or playful, the very second before it shoots off after your feet or sinks its teeth into your ankle.
The other cat, the one with the squinting gaze and normal pupils, is simply relaxed. So the next time a cat looks at you with eyes as wide as saucers, don’t think tenderness: think pure instinct.
