Nothing could kill Claire Bennet. A nail would go through her head and minutes later she would already be back on her feet, whole again. Millions of people sat in front of the television every week to watch her endure it all.
“Save the cheerleader, save the world”, went the phrase that defined a series and an era. The whole world watched someone trying to save her.
Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. Her representative confirmed the news to ABC News. The circumstances have not been disclosed.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden”, her team said in a statement.
“She was an incomparable light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to everyone who knew her, and to the millions who watched her on screen.”
She began working before she turned one, in commercials. Before she was ten, she had already appeared in Remember the Titans and Ally McBeal. Then came Nashville, six seasons as Juliette Barnes, two Golden Globe nominations. She lent her voice to a mammoth in Ice Age. In Racing Stripes, she acted alongside her younger brother, Jansen, who died in 2023.
But the character who made her immortal on screen could not protect her from anything outside it.
This year, Hayden published her memoir: This Is Me: A Reckoning. There, she spoke about her addiction, the depression that took hold of her after becoming a mother, and the grief over her brother. She recounted what it was like to grow up under everyone’s gaze from childhood, having never chosen that gaze.
She did not regenerate on her own, like Claire. She broke, like anyone else. And this year, for the first time, she decided to tell how she put herself back together, in her own words, after a lifetime in which others spoke for her.
She leaves behind a daughter, Kaya, from her relationship with Wladimir Klitschko.
The cheerleader withstood any wound in fiction.
The real woman took years to learn that healing was not instantaneous, and she said so out loud just a few months before she left.
That was her true regeneration: finally telling her own story.
