Behind the alcohol was a woman broken by the distance from her daughter, by a career that did not forgive mistakes, and by a personal life that was falling apart in her hands. She drank, she says, so she would not feel. Until a diagnosis forced her to face what she was doing to herself.
Going into rehab was not the instant happy ending we sometimes imagine. It meant painful withdrawal, body and mind craving the substance that had sustained them. But on the other side, she found something she did not expect: “Joy was a million times better than any drug”, she wrote. And before that, a phrase that sums up the whole journey: “I liked myself. What a revelation!”
