Long before becoming the unforgettable Claire Bennet from Heroes and the star of Nashville, Hayden Panettiere appeared in one of the most beloved comedies of the 2000s: Malcolm in the Middle.
The actress was just 14 years old when she played Jessica, a manipulative and rather unpredictable young woman who ended up becoming one of Malcolm and Reese’s most entertaining rivals.
But years later, Hayden shared a rather curious story about how she got that role.
In a 2025 interview, she recalled that Bryan Cranston, who played Hal and also directed the episode in which she made her debut, was instrumental in helping her get the character.
During the audition, Cranston reportedly told her: “You’re completely wrong for this. But we’re going to make it work”.
For Hayden, that experience was special because she felt that, for the first time, someone had decided to truly take a chance on her.
The actress also explained that she loved playing Jessica precisely because she was very different from the image the public had of her.
“I loved being able to play a character so different from how I knew people saw me”, she recalled.
And it was no minor role: Jessica went on to star in several of the series’ most memorable moments, including her confrontations and psychological games with Malcolm.
Hayden even shared an anecdote that made that encounter with Cranston even more special: her mother had worked with him years earlier on the soap opera Loving. During the audition, Hayden asked him to come out and say hello to her, and both of their reactions were very emotional.
Now, after Panettiere’s death at age 36, scenes of that young actress who was just beginning her career began circulating again.
Many remember her as a Hollywood star, but before that she was also Jessica, the teenager who came into Malcolm’s family to turn it upside down.
