Esteban Landrau has the body of a trans man, but he never underwent surgery to remove his female reproductive organs.

That was what allowed him, together with his partner Danna Sultana —a Colombian trans model and actress born in Medellín in 1984—, to conceive a child naturally. Neither of them had undergone final gender reassignment, and that personal decision ultimately became the center of a story that traveled around the world in 2020.

For months, Esteban documented his belly growing, month by month, in front of the cameras. In the eighth month, he had a false labor alarm that turned out to be just normal pregnancy contractions. Finally, on Sunday, July 19, 2020, Ariel Landrau Pérez, the couple’s first child, was born at a hospital in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Danna, who now lives in New York, said in interviews that no trans person is required to complete a transition process in order to start a family like the one they built.
